What does Zustellung mean?

Zustellung means: an office or court delivers a letter to you in a way it can prove later.

Such a letter often comes in a yellow envelope with a Postzustellungsurkunde. Other ways are an Einschreiben with Rückschein or a handover at the office.

For many letters, the deadline starts with the Zustellung, for example for a Bußgeldbescheid or a Mahnbescheid.

With a yellow envelope, the date on it counts. This is true even if you take the letter out of your mailbox later.

  • Einschreiben An Einschreiben is a registered letter: the post records when it was sent and when it arrived.
  • Bekanntgabe Bekanntgabe (notification) means: a Bescheid counts as having reached you. The deadline usually counts from this day.
  • Frist A Frist is the time within which you must do something, for example reply or file a Widerspruch.
